Post Office Letter Carriers eager to help “Stamp Out Hunger” in Ponca City this Saturday, May 14th.
The largest one-day food drive in the United States also happens to be one of the easiest to be a part of; all it takes is a quick trip to your mailbox.
On Saturday, May 14th over 175,000 letter carriers nationwide, will be picking up food donations on their regular mail routes during the 30th Annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive.
2019 food drive brought in 17,000 pounds of food to fill the local food bank, pantries and shelters here in Ponca City. The need is great with hunger striking many more Americans then last year– we see the faces of the hungry children, elderly and families every day as we deliver their mail says Alex Tosch Ponca City Postmaster.
Throughout the week leading up to the food drive, local letter carriers will be dropping off reminder post cards and special grocery bags to both city and rural residents mailboxes. The letter carriers encourage those who can help to fill the bags, or any other grocery bag, with nonperishable food items and leave them by their mailboxes on the morning of Saturday, May 14th. Your letter carrier will do the rest, making sure the food gets to the seven agencies that help those in our community. The numbers are staggering with more than 50 million American are unsure where their next meal is coming from.
Below are the local agencies that will receive the canned vegetables, macaroni and cheese, tuna fish, Campbell’s Soup, and other non-perishable food items that are left on the porches throughout our community.
Survivor Resource Network-aka Domestic Violence Program 580.762.2873, for those experiencing abuse – food, clothing and other necessities are provided to both adults and children in crisis.
Golden Villa Adult Day Services at 100 E. Hartford is a community based daytime program for frail, elderly and partially impaired persons. They are fed breakfast and lunch plus two nutritious snacks five days a week.
New Emergency Resource Agency located at 112 S. 1st. helps individuals and families with a variety of emergency services. For hungry families and individuals in
Northern Oklahoma Youth Services at 2203 N. Ash provides numerous services to youth and families. Three meals a day are served to youth up to 18 years of age who are temporarily residing at the youth shelter.
Peachtree Landing located at 105 W. Hazel provides a home for the homeless as they struggle to get back on their feet and gain permanent housing.
The Mission located at 909 E. South Avenue, provides a feeding program on Tuesday-Thursday,
breakfast is served at 9am and lunch is at 1pm, on Friday lunch is served at 12pm.
